The Alaska Science and Technology Foundation has invested a total of $299,756 in funds, in addition to $285,958 in matching funds, for three local projects. These projects are Alaska InvestNet’s capital matching network, a study of ulcer-causing bacteria and its prevalence in Alaska, and UAF’s study of dietary supplements in order to increase the lifespan of muskox.

Global Finance magazine has ranked Wells Fargo bank as the "safest bank" in North America, based upon long-term CD ratings from the world’s three major rating agencies. The magazine also rated the bank the "best bank" and the "best Internet bank."

The 2001 Special Olympics World Winter Games and Northwest Airlines have launched a partnership that will result in donations of cash and mileage to the Special Olympics movement. Providence Health System Alaska would like to thank the Alaska Delegation for their hard work to ensure that services provided by Alaska’s hospitals, physicians, nursing homes, home health agencies, and other providers will remain available to seniors and to the communities that serve them.

The Alaska Industrial Development and Export Authority board of directors has voted to make available a $17.5 million dividend to the state general fund. The dividend is based on AIDEA’s 2000 net income of $35.6 million. Payment will be made in 2001.

The Internal Revenue Service has awarded a $53,427 grant to the Alaska Small Business Development Center for its low-income taxpayer clinic. The grant program is designed to help organizations provide low-cost legal assistance to taxpayers to resolve tax disputes.

Tom Calla of Bezek Durst Seiser is now a registered architect in the State of Alaska. Calla earned his Bachelors in Architecture from Louisiana State University, where he is also a registered architect. He has been employed by Bezek Durst Seiser since 1998.

Anita Foster, Erika Bills, Cris Parrocha, Kerry Madden, and Shanna Lankford have all been named to officer positions at Northrim Bank. Foster is responsible for managing the bank’s marketing research, product tracking, and the Management Customer Information File program, while the other three employees have been named Financial Sales officers.

The 2001 Fur Rendezvous Royalty, who act as goodwill ambassadors and attend Rondy events, have been named. Richard Sanchis, owner of Arctic Roadrunner Restaurants, will be Lord Trapper and Oro Stewart, owner of Stewart’s Photo, will be Lady Trapper. Stewart has been involved in the event since its inception.

Elmer E. Rasmusson of National Bank of Alaska has bequeathed $5 million to the Alaska Pacific University Foundation. The gift will go towards APU’s $20 million capital campaign.

Iditarod Champion Martin Buser will mush for pledges to benefit Catholic Social Services’ Brother Francis Shelter, which serves thousands of homeless men and women each year. Buser invites you to pledge an amount of money for each mile he mushes, or a flat amount for the 1,151 miles of the Iditarod. The race begins Saturday, March 3.
