The Anchorage
Chamber of Commerce works hard to coordinate
activities that benefit the community and members.
These events provide an excellent opportunity for
Chamber members to get involved and to give back to
the community in which they live and work. Our most
visible events and programs include the following:
Anchorage
ATHENA Society Annual Luncheon -The ATHENA
award program celebrates the potential of all women as
valued members and leaders of the business community.
The Society selects new members annually and honors
them at this luncheon. The Society also presents the
ATHENA award to a member who has devoted their time
and energy to promoting women in business.

Anchorage
ATHENA PowerLink program - This
year, the Anchorage ATHENA Society became home to the
ATHENA PowerLink program which
"links" a woman-owned business with a panel
of unpaid advisors who agree to help the business
achieve its goals. This program is aimed at helping
those businesses that need help to grow.
Business After Hours - This is an opportunity
to showcase your business in an informal, open house
atmosphere, while allowing members to network and
discover what your business has to offer. It's a great
way to get exposure at very little cost. These open
houses are held once a month on the third Thursday of
every month. There is no cost for attendees. Check the
calendar or the web-site for each month’s location.
Business Connection Breakfast
– This is a great networking opportunity for
business owners. Speakers make presentations on topics
of interest to Chamber members, with time provided for
introductions of all attendees. The breakfasts are
held on the second Tuesday of every month, 7 a.m., at
the Westcoast International Inn (333 W. International
Airport Road.) The cost for the breakfast is $12 for
members and $14 for non-members.
Chamber Night at the
Aces – The
Anchorage Aces open up their ice at a special discount
rate to Chamber members once a year for one night
only. This great night out is a valuable publicity
opportunity for your company. Bring your employees,
friends, and family to the Sullivan Arena and have
your company name printed in the program, up in lights
on the readerboard, announced over the public address
system, and in the Chamber newsletter.
Chamber Small Business
Marketplace –
This showcase was designed as a group
Business After Hours for small Chamber businesses that
were unable to hold a Business After Hours on their
premises. It is held in May each year.
City
of Lights -
This Anchorage Chamber winter beautification program encourages
businesses and residents to decorate with miniature
white lights to help brighten the winter months from
October to March. The program has helped increase
community spirit in the dark, dreary winter months,
has turned dark, dangerous neighborhood streets and
parks into safe venues for children, and since its
inception in 1984 has established a whole new economic
industry in the city – lightscaping.

Clean-Up - The
Anchorage Chamber organizes and coordinates a city-wide
collection of trash by local businesses and schools to
make Anchorage a cleaner place. Clean-Up traditionally
begins on the first Monday in May and lasts for one
week. The Blue Jeans Luncheon, which serves hamburgers
and hotdogs to approximately 1,000 people at the
Sullivan Arena, is the kick-off event. The week
culminates in Clean-Up Day where local school children
compete for the coveted Clean-Up bicycle. This year,
volunteers and residents picked up nearly 9 million
pounds of trash.
Conferences and
Seminars – The
Chamber hosts several annual conferences and seminars
for the Anchorage business community. Last year’s
big successes included the half-day E-Commerce Seminar
in March which featured IBM Consultant W. Allen
Jacobs, and the annual Marketing Seminar in May, which
featured Independent Consultant Bill Evans.
Crime Prevention &
Safety Fair -
In conjunction with the Municipality of Anchorage and
the Mayor's office, the Chamber hosts a Crime
Prevention & Safety Fair each year at a local mall
to showcase the public safety resources available to
the community. The Fair is aimed at local children and
teens to provide education about crime prevention and
safety. Local bands entertain the crowds while
organizations man booths.
"Get on Board with the Chamber" Train
Ride - The Chamber Ambassadors coordinate a 3-hour
networking afternoon train ride along Turnagain Arm
every September. This event is designed to introduce
new members to the Chamber and other members. It’s
also a great event for members to gather business
contacts.
Gold Pan Awards - This gala event is an
opportunity to recognize a deserving business,
individual, or organization for their civic
contribution to life in Anchorage. The banquet is held
annually in September and includes a formal dinner for
several hundred people. The 2002 "It's a Jungle
Out There" themed event will be held Sept. 28 at
the Sheraton Anchorage Hotel. Nominate someone
you know! The deadline to submit nominations is
Friday Aug. 16. Print
an application here.
Industry Showcases – The
Anchorage Chamber holds annual Industry Showcases for member
businesses in the tourism industry and those who have
Holiday products for sale. These
showcases are held in April and November in place of
the monthly Business Connection Breakfasts. To sign up
for a booth at one of these showcases, contact the
Anchorage Chamber office at least one month prior
(907) 272-2401 or info@anchoragechamber.org.
"Make It Monday" Forums - This weekly
luncheon features prominent local and national
speakers discussing issues of relevance to the
business community. 2002 speakers include: Sen. Ted Stevens,
Gov. Tony Knowles, Mayor George Wuerch, Alaska Airlines
President Bill Ayer, and Lt. Gen. Phillip Oates.
The forums are held every Monday, noon, at
the 4th Avenue Theatre, unless otherwise specified.
Locations may change depending on availability and
luncheon size so always check the Anchorage Chamber calendar or
Website. The cost for the luncheon is $14 for members
and $20 for non-members; coffee only is available for
$5. These luncheons often sell out; to guarantee a seat,
please make reservations. Call (907) 272-2401 or
e-mail: admin@anchoragechamber.org.
Military Appreciation
Week
- All areas of the community participate in
this effort to recognize the benefits of the military
presence in Anchorage. The kick-off is a luncheon
sponsored by businesses for local armed services
personnel. The week culminates with a picnic held for
the military personnel and their families at both
Elmendorf Air Force Base and Fort Richardson. In June
2002 the Anchorage Chamber and more than 100 volunteers fed nearly
7,000 attendees.
New Member Orientation
–
Orientations are
held every other month in the Anchorage Chamber office.
Orientations give members the opportunity to find
out more about benefits and services the Anchorage Chamber
has to offer, to ask questions, meet staff and
get involved. Areas covered include: member benefits
and services, Anchorage Chamber committees, events, and
introductions.
School
Business Partnerships - The mission of this
program is to enhance the education of students and
provide businesses with well-qualified future
employees through increased cooperation between
businesses and the Anchorage School District. |
