This morning the Anchorage Chamber of Commerce distributed a “Looking Out for Business” Alert about House Bill 255.  This legislation continues to be a work-in-progress; please watch for future information and possible additional requests for action.

There are only 15-days left in the regular session of the state Legislature.  What issues are important to you and your business?  Are there any specific bills and/or legislation that you feel the Anchorage Chamber needs to address?  The SALGA committee is your link to the community; committee members review and discuss issues of state and local importance and make recommendations to the Board of Directors for action.  For additional information and/or a copy of upcoming agendas contact Emily Ford at (907) 677-7105 or e-mail communications@anchoragechamber.org.

Blue Jeans Luncheon Reservation Deadline, EXTENDED until Wednesday, April 28, 5 p.m.
Don’t miss your chance to participate in the 2004 Blue Jeans Luncheon, in support of the Anchorage Chamber Citywide Cleanup program.  The annual luncheon will officially kick-off this year’s Anchorage Chamber Citywide Cleanup effort on Monday, May 3, 2004 .  Cost is $225 per table of 10.  For additional information contact Christy Andresen from Logistics, LLC at (907) 276-6060 by this Wednesday, April 28 at 5 p.m.

Anchorage Chamber Citywide Cleanup Week, Saturday, May 1 through Saturday, May 8, 2004
On the following dates during the Anchorage Chamber Citywide Cleanup week, the Anchorage Regional Landfill, Central Transfer Station and Girdwood Transfer Stations are open for free, residential dumping: 

May 1, May 5-8:
Anchorage Regional Landfill 
and Central Transfer Station:  8 a.m. - 5 p.m.

May 1, May 7-8
Girdwood Transfer Station:  10 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Dance to the music of Top Cover, the Air Force Band of the Pacific, dine on hamburgers and other picnic favorites, enter your finest trash bag fashions in the “Trashy Fashion” show and bid in the live auction for your chance to walk away with a $500 shopping spree at the Dimond Center or two round-trip airline tickets, courtesy of Hawaiian Vacations during this year’s Blue Jeans Luncheon!  Don’t miss the reservation deadline, this Wednesday, April 28; no tickets will be sold at the door. Ambassadors committee, Tuesday, May 4, 4 p.m. , Harry’s Bar and Grill ( 101 West Benson Boulevard )
Are you looking for a way to volunteer with the Anchorage Chamber and network with fellow members?  The Ambassadors are an energetic group of Anchorage Chamber members who assist at Anchorage Chamber events, welcome new members to the Anchorage Chamber and visit with long-standing members.

Military committee, Thursday, May 6, 7:30 a.m. , Anchorage Chamber Board Room ( 441 West 5th Avenue, Suite 300 )
The Anchorage Chamber Military Appreciation Week is fast approaching and the Military committee is busy planning this year’s festivities.  Volunteers are being recruited for the 2004 Military Appreciation Picnic, to be held on Friday, June 11 at Fort Richardson Army Post and Elmendorf Air Force Base.  For additional information about how you can be involved, contact Laura Johnson at (907) 677-7118 or e-mail memreten@anchoragechamber.org.

2004 Alaska Biz Fair, Saturday, May 8, 8:30 a.m. , University of Alaska Anchorage , Business Education Building ( 3211 Providence Drive ) 
Would you like to learn more about how to start or grow a small-business?  Are you a small business owner who needs help understanding marketing and public relations?  The free Alaska Biz Fair offers seminars and information for small business owners and aspiring entrepreneurs. 

Training seminar topics include: how to start a business, business expansion considerations, an overview of QuickBooks, assessing the feasibility of your business idea and public relations for a small business. Did you know?

May 10-16, 2004 is the National Cover the Uninsured Week. The Alaska’s Covering Kids Coalition, Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium, Southcentral Foundation and the Alaska Primary Care Association will be holding health and enrollment fairs, small business and labor discussions and open-houses designed to raise awareness and seek solutions for the 109,000 Alaskans who lack health care coverage.

On Thursday, May 13, at 11:30 a.m. there will be a labor union and small-business round-table discussion in the Anchorage Chamber Board Room.  Participants are invited to share and discuss their stories as to how health insurance benefits are provided to employees and the challenges in finding affordable health care.   Information about resources available will be shared and members will have an opportunity to discuss challenges they face.  All Anchorage Chamber members are welcome to attend; for additional information contact Donna Elliot at the Alaska ’s Covering Kids Program by calling 792-3954 or e-mail dmelliott@anthc.org.
