Mission
The mission of the
Anchorage Chamber of Commerce is to "be effective
as a business leader by supporting and focusing our
broad-based membership in their efforts to grow
Anchorage into a Premier American City."
On May 20, 1916, an
editorial in Anchorage’s daily newspaper called for
the community to get behind the efforts of the
fledgling Anchorage Chamber of Commerce.
"A
live, progressive and enthusiastic Chamber of Commerce
is a distinct asset to any city or town,"
it read. "It is not to
be expected that one man can know public sentiment,
unless the people have some means or method of
conveying to him in a concrete way, their wishes.
Hence, the desirability of a Chamber of Commerce to
represent the people."
The call for Chamber
members back then was, "You
will never receive exactly what you want unless you
ask for it. Get in line. Become a member of the
Chamber of Commerce. Be a booster and help carry out
the objectives of this organization. The Chamber of
Commerce is desirous of having as many as possible of
our businessmen enrolled as members in order that a
united effort can be made to promote every movement
that is for the upbuild of Anchorage."
This could have been
written today. Many things have changed, but the
original idea remains the same: representation of a
cross-section of businesses and their employees in the
matters important to Anchorage’s growth and
opportunities - a dynamic place to live, work and do
business.
The Anchorage Chamber
of Commerce is committed to the business community of
Anchorage. The more hands and minds involved in
our membership, the more that can be accomplished to
mold Anchorage into the image we desire.
With your membership in
the Anchorage Chamber of Commerce, you can become
involved in your community and become part of a strong
business network.
